Make a plan
Figure out when you want to retire. Is this something you intend on doing in ten years? In ten months? In ten days? Are you waiting until you are able to collect on your pension, or is there a certain age that is your magic number?
Also decide what your idea of retirement is. Do you want to stop working altogether or do you want to switch to being a part time employee? Do you want to settle into a smaller home or get an RV and take to the open road?
Decide what you want to do and make a plan. Like any other plan, remember that your plans can change; be ready to be flexible, as sometimes plans change and things happen. By making a plan you are able to begin to figure out want you need to do to get the life you want once you exit the work force.

It is never too late to start saving money. If you have nothing put aside, start banking as much as you can right away. Invest smartly, putting your money into safe, short term investment vehicles that earn maximum interest with minimal risk. Consider meeting with a financial advisor or a banker to see what is best for you and your situation.
If you have already been saving up and already have an existing retirement fund, good for you. This will help you greatly once you exit the work force. However, don’t stop saving. Consider tightening your belt and cutting back on spending more as you get closer and closer to your retirement.
